In recent years, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has become more widely diagnosed due to an increase in research and awareness. Now, this does not mean that the presence of ASD has necessarily surged over time, it really means that we are more aware than ever of how prevalent it is generally. On a national level, researchers have found that there are over 5.4 million adults living with ASD and that over 40,000 of those individuals are living in North Carolina.
Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) states that “Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of developmental disabilities that are typically associated with challenges of varying severity in the areas of social interaction, communication, and repetitive/restricted behaviors.” This unique experience often leaves individuals with ASD with a lack of resources and support. Thankfully, ASNC has made it their dedicated mission to meet those unique needs by setting out to improve “the lives of individuals with autism, supports their families, and educates communities.”
